Announcement of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for academic exchanges between Ireland and Canada in Ottawa, March 18, 2004.

A Memorandum of Understanding for bilateral scholarship exchanges between Ireland and Canada was signed in Ottawa on March 18 by the Ireland Canada University Foundation and the Ireland Fund of Canada, witnessed by the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern of Ireland and Prime Minister Paul Martin of Canada, following their meeting at the EU Canada summit. This MOU inaugurates the bilateral scholarships awards programme of 2004, when, for the first time in the history of the two countries, scholarships are being awarded in both directions to support research into projects which have relevance to both Ireland and Canada.

The Ireland Canada University Foundation, which is chaired by former President of Ireland, Dr. Patrick Hillery and Dr. Craig Dobbin O.C. from Newfoundland, has just announced that it is offering short visit travel scholarships both ways this year, for Irish scholars to visit Canada and Canadian scholars to visit Ireland. The ICUF scholarship programme supporting Irish scholars to visit Canada has been operating since the establishment of the Foundation some ten years ago, but this is the first year that scholarships are being offered for Canadian scholars to visit Ireland. The Canadian programme is being administered by the Ireland Fund of Canada who's Chairman is Mr William Neill and Executive Director is Ms Eleanor McGrath.

These scholarships are sponsored by commercial companies in both Ireland and Canada, and are targeted at young emerging scholars to support their research in topics which relate to both Ireland and Canada. Details of the Foundation and of the scholarships are given on website www.icuf.ie

Dr Craig Dobbin O.C. sponsored the Chair of Canadian Studies in University College Dublin in 1993, and the Foundation was established shortly after. He is the chairman and CEO of the CHC Helicopter Corporation of St John's Newfoundland, which is the leading helicopter leasing company in the world, and which operates the coast guard service in Ireland. He also acts as the honorary Consul General for Ireland in Newfoundland and Labrador. The scholarship programme is administered by Professor John Kelly, former Registrar in University College Dublin.
