Dobbin Scholarships: Eligibility and Assessment
Nature of Awards
The awards are designed principally for scholars and academics who are currently engaged at graduate level research in a discipline which is, or has potential to be, related to both Ireland and Canada, or who are commencing such research.
The ICUF Scholarships are for short visits which are to benefit the scholar’s research, to establish new academic contacts in the other country, and which will provide the opportunity for the development of ongoing links in that research area.
All academic disciplines are eligible.
Eligibility
Applicants must be permanent residents of either country, and have been living there for at least five years.
The visit must take place within 12 months after the award is made.
The term ‘Ireland’ refers to the entirety of the island of Ireland.
Please note, due to the spirit and nature of the scholarship, the following are ineligible;
- individuals seeking subsidy for study (whether for a short a course, or an undergraduate or postgraduate degree)
- academics using the award to go on a sabbatical
- one off visits, say to attend a conference or give a lecture.
Designation
With the exception of the scholarships listed below, scholarships are open to scholars of all academic disciplines, and the allocation of the different named scholarships to the selected scholars is decided by the Foundation.
- The Atlantic Corridor scholarships (for Irish applicants) are specifically for scholars with affiliations to Athlone Institute of Technology
- The Canadian Helicopter Scholarship is open to scholars in University College Dublin pursuing research in the area of offshore exploration.
- The Sprott Foundation Scholarship is specifically for Canadian scholars who are currently, or have been connected to Carleton University
- The AGF Scholarship is open to scholars whose research is in the area of economics / finance / business
Assessment
The applications are evaluated by an assessment panel in each country, and their decisions on the awards are communicated to all applicants within two months after the closing date for applications.
The funds are provided to meet the costs of a short visit of three to four weeks to a university or research institution in the other country and the precise details of the visits are left to the scholars to decide on and arrange for themselves.
The plan and schedule for the visit, as presented in the Application Form will, however, be an important factor in its evaluation by the Assessment Panel in each country.
