Teach Irish in Canada – A Life-Changing Opportunity
Since 2009, ICUF has supported the development of the Irish language in Canada by appointing  Teagascóirí Gaeilge (Irish Language Instructors) to a wide range of universities across Canada. This unique experience offers much more than a teaching role—it is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture, build connections, and contribute to the global appreciation of the Irish language.

In the Classroom
Teaching Irish in Canada is an energizing and rewarding experience. For many Canadians, the Irish language is a vital part of their heritage, a living connection to their ancestors. Others are drawn to it as one of Europe’s oldest languages, with its rich Celtic roots and unique linguistic beauty. Some are captivated by Irish culture through music, literature, and folklore, and see the language as a gateway to a deeper understanding of Ireland’s traditions.

This enthusiasm creates an exciting atmosphere in the classroom. Students arrive eager to learn, often with great curiosity and motivation. Class sizes can range from small groups to as many as 35-40 students. While some take Irish for a semester or two, others dedicate themselves to achieving fluency, pursuing the language at a more advanced level.

If selected as an ICUF Teagascóir Gaeilge, you will primarily be teaching beginners, but you may also work with more experienced learners who are keen to deepen their skills. Regardless of their level of Irish, the enthusiasm you encounter will inspire and energise your teaching, making it a truly rewarding experience.

Beyond the Classroom
The role of the ICUF Teagascóir Gaeilge goes far beyond formal teaching. Community engagement is a vibrant and rewarding aspect of this experience. From running Irish language classes and conversation circles, to organizing cultural events such as celebrations for St. Brigid’s and St Patrick’s Day, traditional music sessions, and Irish film nights, you will witness firsthand the enthusiasm Canadians have for Irish heritage. For some, speaking Irish is a deeply emotional connection to their ancestors; for others, it is an exciting way to engage with one of Europe’s oldest languages.

Getting involved with local GAA clubs or cultural groups offers Teagascóirí more opportunities to build friendship and connection, both within the university and the wider community. Many Teagascóirí find this aspect of their role very fulfilling and engaging.

A Supportive Community
As an ICUF Teagascóir, you will not be alone. You will join a supportive group of fellow instructors, forming lasting friendships with the other ICUF Teagascóirí, as well as with colleagues, students, and the local community. Past participants have explored Canada and beyond, with ICUF Teagascóirí often traveling together during breaks, and hosting each other for visits. For those eager to travel, this is an excellent base to explore North America.

What You Receive
Successful applicants receive:

  • A bursary of €20,900 for the period September – May.
  • Accommodation provided directly or financially supported by the host university.
  • Travel and visa costs covered by ICUF, including assistance from a third-party service.

Teaching begins in early September, with a break over Christmas, and continues until April. Most Teagascóirí fly out in mid-August to settle into their new environment. Teagascóirí are welcome to find other work in Canada during the summer, and the IEC visa allows for this. Many take the opportunity to travel across North America (even South America) during Christmas and summer.

For those who want to deepen their experience, there is the possibility of staying on for a second year, subject to agreement with the host university. Many who choose this path find it even more rewarding, as they build on their first year’s achievements and strengthen their connections.

 Application Process

  • Applications Open: January
  • Interviews:   April
  • Placements offered: Within three weeks of interviews (while placement in a specific university cannot be guaranteed, ICUF works to match successful applicants with a university suited to their skills and preferences).

Successful applicants a will be required to apply for an IEC (International Experience Canada) Visa, the costs of which will be covered by ICUF.

A Life-Changing Experience
Whether you stay for a year or longer, teaching Irish in Canada can be a transformative experience. Some Teagascóirí have chosen to make Canada their permanent home, while others return to Ireland with cherished memories and invaluable experiences. Either way, this program offers an unforgettable opportunity to contribute to the global appreciation of the Irish language while embarking on a cultural adventure like no other.

Career Progression
Becoming an ICUF Teagascóir Gaeilge is a remarkable opportunity to develop skills and experience that open doors to a wide range of career opportunities, both within the Irish language sector and beyond. Many former Teagascóirí have progressed to academic roles, such as lecturers and assistant professors at the University of Galway and Maynooth University. Others have pursued careers in broadcasting and journalism, working with organizations such as TG4, as well as with newer media platforms.

Several past Teagascóirí have stayed on in Canada, while others have leveraged their experience to secure roles in Irish primary and secondary schools after career breaks, often finding more dynamic and engaging opportunities on their return. Some have become translators in the EU, Irish language officers in universities and government organisations, or specialists in language planning and policy.

The experience gained as a Teagascóir Gaeilge is highly transferable. In addition to teaching in a university context, you will develop valuable skills in organizing cultural events, building networks, and working independently under your own initiative. These experiences not only enrich your time as an instructor but also make you a strong candidate for a wide variety of roles, ensuring your career can flourish in whatever direction you choose.

This programme is funded by the Government of Ireland, and by our Canadian partner universities.
