ICUF is committed to advancing the strong, historic relationship between Canada and Ireland towards a new era of engagement and inspiration. Anchored in our common values of inclusivity, tolerance, individual liberty, and environmental and societal responsibility, our mission is to energize new friendship and collaboration that will drive positive changes, benefiting the people of both countries, as well as the wider global community.
ICUF will achieve this through the provision of scholarship opportunities to Canadian and Irish scholars, and the organisation of related events which support the development of academic, research and cultural networks linking both countries.
Through our various strands of operation, we will support advancements along four strategic pillars:
- Supporting Sustainable Futures: we support research and collaboration that focuses on environmental sustainability, community resilience, and robust political and socio-economic systems. This pillar empowers individuals to lead and contribute to sustainable advancements that address our world’s pressing challenges.
- Promoting Peace and Reconciliation: We recognise that both countries share a commitment to global peacekeeping. Both Canada and Ireland are also committed to ongoing domestic processes of reconciliation. In recognition of these shared aspects, this pillar supports Canadian and Irish scholars working together to support research and leadership which can contribute to greater global peace and understanding.
- Celebrating and Preserving Indigenous Languages and Culture: Ireland and Canada share a commitment to preserve and revitalise Indigenous languages and the many cultural activities language-learning makes possible. We promote and advance these common goals by supporting Irish language learning and exchange in Ireland and Canada, and by creating platforms for connection with the Indigenous peoples of Canada, fostering language learning, preservation, and cultural promotion in both nations.
- Contemporary Culture and Heritage: Canada and Ireland have long been intertwined, sharing a rich tapestry of social and cultural ties. We nurture these bonds by promoting research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences in Ireland and Canada. Supporting these connections enhances our understanding of shared histories, our identities, and the values that guide us. By fostering new connections in the cultural sphere today, we pave the way for a future rich in collaboration and understanding. We strive to preserve existing ties while inspiring a new generation of connections between our two countries.
ICUF recognises that all academic fields have a part to play in supporting such advancement, and is thus committed to supporting academic collaboration and engagement across all academic fields.
