Chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an tsraith cúig seachtaine de ranganna Gaeilge a cuireadh ar fáil saor in aisce ar líne do 400 Ceanadach (tuilleadh eolais anseo), d’eagraíomar Cóisir Mhór ar Zoom Dé Sathairn an 6 Meitheamh ag 22.00 AC / 17.00 ACO.

Fad a bhí an oíche ag titim i mBaile Átha Cliath agus muintir Victoria, British Columbia, ag tabhairt faoin mbróinse, bhí Ambasadóir na hÉireann chuig Ceanada, a Oirirceas Jim Kelly, ag cur fáilte chroíúil roimh an lucht féachana thall i gCeanada agus in Éirinn chomh maith. Is ansin a chuir Liam Ó Maonlaí tús le cúrsaí le leagan álainn den amhrán ‘An raibh tú ag an gCarraig?’ a chanadh.

Ina dhiaidh sin, fuair muid blaiseadh de rogha amhrán agus scéalta ó dhaoine ar fud Cheanada agus chonaiceamar bean as an Úcráin fiú agus í ag damhsa cornphíopa óna baile i dTorontó. Chuir Liam Ó Maonlaí deireadh foirmiúil leis an gCóisir Mhór le hamhrán eile; ‘Sí do Mhaimeó í’, agus is i ndiaidh sin a briseadh lucht freastail síos i ngrúpaí beaga le go mbeadh deis ag cách cúpla focal a chleachtadh, agus leanadh den chomhrá go dtí an tráthnóna (nó an iarnóin i gcás mhuintir British Columbia!).

Bhí cuma fhíor-dhearfach ar an aiseolas a fuarthas ar an bpointe agus tá ICUF ag tabhairt faoi iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar fhéidearthachtaí i ndáil le himeachtaí mar seo a eagrú níos rialta, b’fhéidir ar bhonn ráithiúil. Más spéis leat a bheith curtha ar aon eolas maidir le himeachtaí mar seo, cuir síos d’ainm ar ár liosta seoltaí trí chliceáil anseo.

Irish Language ‘zoom party’

To conclude the five weeks of free online Irish language classes provided to 400 people across Canada (more info here), we organised a “Cóisir Mhór” (big party) on Zoom on Saturday, 6th June, at 22.00 IST / 17.00 EDT.

So, with night falling in Dublin, and brunch underway in Victoria B.C., Ireland’s Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Jim Kelly, provided warm words of welcome to the viewers all across Canada and Ireland.  Liam Ó Maonlaí then got the show on the road with a beautiful rendition of “An raibh tú ar an gCarraig”.

What followed was a selection of songs and stories from people from across Canada, and we even had a Ukranian woman dance a wonderful hornpipe from her home in Toronto!

Liam Ó Maonlaí brought the formal element of ‘An Chóisir Mhór’ to a close with another song, ‘Sí do Mhaimeó’, after which attendees were broken into a number of small groups, so that everyone could try our their cúpla focal, and the chat continued on into the evening (or afternoon, for those in British Columbia!). Immediate feedback was hugely positive, and ICUF has undertaken to explore the possibility of organising these events more regularly, perhaps a quarterly basis. If you would like to be informed of any such future events, please sign up to our mailing list by clicking here.
