June 4, 2024

ICUF would like to offer heartfelt congratulations to UCD Professor of Chemical Engineering, Niall English (Dobbin, 2007). Niall was one of 28 new members elected to The Royal Irish Academy, in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, as well as to public service. More information on this on the RIA website here.

The RIA citation noted that ‘Niall is a specialist on electric-field effects on materials, gases and liquids, including in inventions and technology commercialisation. He has been awarded a European Research Council advanced grant on nanobubble lifetime and population engineering, to further research on water treatment and carbon capture. Both of his spin-outs have received European Innovation Council accelerator grants’.

Niall’s 2007 Dobbin Scholarship supported his visit from University College Dublin to the University of Saskatchewan, where he spent several weeks working with Prof. John Tse and his group working in the area of quantum-based Density Functional Theory (DFT), a collaboration that has continued up to the current day.

We wish Niall the very best in all his future endeavours!
