CRH Scholar: Susan Galavan

Susan Galavan being presented with her scholarship award by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn
Dr. Susan Galavan of Trinity College Dublin is the 2014-15 CRH Scholar. Susan will travel to Carleton University in Ottawa and the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton to conduct her research.
Susan writes:
“I am very grateful to CRH plc for their generous support in funding the Dobbin scholarship. This award will fund a four week research trip to Canada, where I will investigate the business interests of the Carvills, an important Irish merchant family. From both sides of the Atlantic, the Carvill brothers were engaged in the timber trade, and this timber formed the skeletal structure behind many of Dublin’s red brick facades. I am currently working on the publication of my doctoral thesis, the first detailed study of Dublin’s Victorian domestic architecture. This research will enable the book to reflect the broader international context, namely the wider supply routes that supported the Victorian suburb. It will also provide an opportunity to connect with academics in universities Ottawa and New Brunswick, opening the potential for future collaborations”.
A leading international player in its industry, CRH is the largest building materials company in North America. More information on CRH here and here.
