Brief Description of Work: This project is a comparison of contemporary Quebec and Irish theatre with a focus on selected playwrights (McGuinness, Carr, Tremblay, Fréchette). It engages a reconsideration of the nation/performance relationship. I contend that the playwrights and plays under consideration reach beyond nation and nationalism to achieve the status of global theatre. The study focuses on the global reach of the plays and on the critical reception they received particularly outside the national context. The concept of ephemeral territories, namely of cultural production that can no longer be delineated by geopolitical boundaries, and the study of global theatre frame this analysis.
