Judith Harford
Visiting Professorship: James M. Flaherty
Brief Description of Work: As a historian of education with particular expertise in the history of women’s education, I intend, as Flaherty Visiting Professor, to shine a gendered spotlight for the first time on the Irish diaspora’s social, political and cultural metamorphosis through the Canadian education system. Specifically, I will focus on first generation Irish Canadian females’ experience of education; the cultural and social values this system promoted; how these values dovetailed and conflicted with core values from the home country and how Irish Canadian females used the system to advance their social mobility
