Maurice Bric

Visiting Professorship: James M. Flaherty

Brief Description of Work: This project focuses on the interaction of Catholicism and Nationalism in Ireland and Quebec during the early-nineteenth century. At the time, Canada saw a dramatic rise in the number of immigrants from Ireland while in politics, Daniel O’Connell was a powerful commentator in both places, especially as the Canadian debate on Empire began to intersect with that of Repeal in Ireland. I am spending the period of the Flaherty Professorship reading contemporary newspapers and pamphlets with a few to completing a monograph on this topic by the end of the year
