Brief Description of Work: I am researching and writing the remaining chapters of a book about James Joyce and the concept of “use” (what it means to use a text, for example, as might be distinguished from interpretation). The working title of this book is Useless Joyce: Textual Functions and Cultural Appropriations. At the same time, Dr. Sam Slote of TCD and I have been discussing plans for a new project on Joyce’s translations (that is, Joyce’s own work as translator, which we hope to collect in a single annotated volume), even as Dr. Slote and I are preparing contributions to a book on translation extremes edited by Dr. Alexandra Lukes (also of TCD).
